Texas Nursing Students' Association

STATE PROJECTS FOR 2007-2008

BREAKTHROUGH TO NURSING:
The purpose of the Breakthrough to Nursing Award program is to:
  1. encourage recruitment and retention of students in nursing schools
  2. target non traditional as well as traditional students
  3. use broad-based strategies including ethnic diversity, gender, and age
  4. promote transcultural awareness in nursing school and in the community at large
  5. encourage and promote a mentoring program.

SAVE YOUR QUARTERS
For the fourth year, the TNSA Board of Directors decided, after reviewing the Guide Dogs of Texas program, that this would be an excellent project to do statewide. The purpose of this project is to collect money that will be donated and used to finance training for Guide Dogs. The program's services are provided to legally blind persons completely free of charge. This project provides increased mobility to the legally blind through the use of specially trained dog guides. This award is based on the amount of money collected and the number of members that participate at the local level.

MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT AND RETAINMENT:
The membership in Texas has slowly declined over the last few years, so we believe that this year membership drives must be a top concern at the local levels. Texas must retain the members that we have now and actively recruit new members in order to remain strong at the national level. Recognition will be given at the state convention to those chapters who:
  1. are a new chapter with the most members
  2. are an existing chapter with the largest percentage increase over the last year
  3. are an existing chapter with the largest actual increase in membership over the last year.
Recognition will also be given to the individual who recruits the most members to his/her chapter.

OTHER AWARDS

COMMUNITY HEALTH PROJECT:
The purpose of the Community Health Project Award program is to:
  1. foster development and implementation of community service on the local, state and national level
  2. educate health care consumers about illness prevention
  3. detect disease earlier and to discuss treatment options
  4. promote community awareness about changes in community health.

IMAGE OF NURSING:
The purpose of the Image of Nursing Award program is to:
  1. promote a positive image of nursing and demonstrate a significant contribution to the public and/or community through image of nursing projects, community health projects, legislative activities, or Breakthrough to Nursing projects
  2. demonstrate use of media coverage of the project or event. Media coverage may include print, television coverage, radio coverage, or the Internet.

POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT AWARD
The purpose of the Political Involvement Award is to:
  1. educate nurses and nursing students about legislation that impacts on the nursing profession and the delivery of nursing services to the public
  2. increase awareness on the local, state, and national levels
  3. promote communication and networking on legislative issues.
